The Newtown Youth Basketball Association relies relies upon community volunteers in order to run its programs. We work with committed volunteers so that we can make the NYBA experience one that all members of the community can afford. The cost of participating in our programs is primarily spent on gym rentals, referees, and equipment.
We are trying to keep our membership fees in-line with other sports programs, but in order to do that, we need volunteers.
The following are areas where volunteer assistance is always needed and appreciated:
Coaching In-House: Our in-house programs generally have 10 players per team. We need a coach per team and would like each team to have at least one assistant coach. We are grateful at how many moms and dads do come out and help on the sidelines, but every year we need more parents to volunteer to coach. The time commitment is usually 1 practice during the week and a game on Saturday. We have coaches clinics each year to give the coaches some guidance, but generally, you do not need to be a "basketball expert" in order to coach in-house.
Coaching Travel: Travel coaches need to have prior coaching experience and will be in a competitive environment against other towns. The time commitment is much greater than in-house. Practice is usually held twice per week and the teams play a 20-25 game schedule with most of the games being played on the weekend.
Division Directors: Each in-house division has a division director who "runs" the division. He/she coordinates the draft, recruits and assigns coaches (most of whom sign up at registration), tackles issues that arise during the season, and handles certain administrative functions such as distributing schedules and equipment. Many times, a parent coach has been generous enough to step forward and take on the directorship.
Biddy Ball Director and Volunteers: Biddy Ball is for K - 1st grade and we are always looking for volunteers to help with this program. The Director oversees the program and the volunteers help run it. Biddy Basketball is takes place on Saturday's, there are no sessions during the week.
Board Positions: Positions on the NYBA board open up periodically. Some positions are more administrative in nature, while others are more program related. Being on the board means attending a meeting once a month, as well as heading up a specific area. The NYBA Contacts page of this website gives an idea of the scope of responsibility for a board position. If you have an interest, please contact one of the board members listed.
Administrative Support Volunteers: Particularly during the fall (pre-season) and winter (in-season), we can use help with administration in such areas as data entry, registration administration, etc. In the near future, we will be looking for people to help run tournaments and other fund raising programs.
You can volunteer for many of the above positions when you register your son or daughter in one of our programs. Feel free to also contact NYBA if you want to volunteer by emailing
